Happy Earth Day

Happy Earth Day. In celebration of today I decided to do a post on my indoor garden I just designed. The garden is located just inside the french doors that lead to my backyard so it gets plenty of natural light. I will add a how-to post of you want to make your own hanging shelves like these tonight. Right now my garden consists mostly of succulents because they super easy to take care of. My tips for succulent lovers are… 1: forget to water them. No I’m not joking, most people OVER water and drown these little guys. 2: lots of sun. They need sun and can handle direct sunlight although I find indirect sunlight works just fine. 3: use the right soil. Yes there are different types of soil for plants and the best kind to use for these guys is a cactus mix. It drains quickly and doesn’t retain a lot of water which keeps em happy and helps prevent overwatering. 4: Last make sure your pot has drainage holes or you can put gravel in the bottom. This prevents root rot.

I also have an African Violet which doesn’t like to bloom but is doing pretty well. The tick to these guys are to not water from the top but place them in a saucer of water and let the plant pull up water from the bottom. I have a liner in my pot so I take the plant liner out, set in water for a day and return him to his home. Keeps him happy. (yes I decided it was a he, since he doesn’t like to have flowers)

I mixed it up with a couple unexpected planters. A grandma chic teacup and a cute creamer. Because these don’t’ have drainage holes I just put a little gravel in the bottom.

The buffet console is made of repurposed wood so water spots and such from the garden are no problem and add to the character of the piece. The pots come from mostly Anthropologie and West Elm with a few others I found here or there. The brass pieces and frames are vintage flea market finds. That cute rocking bird is West Elm. Those are not actual books but faux book boxes I found. I didn’t want to risk water ruining actual books. And the Billy Balls are actually dried so they will look like that for years to come.

I want to add some herbs later to the garden so I have fresh ones to cook with but this little garden will keep me happy the way it is for now. Hope you enjoyed the pictures and stay tuned for the DIY of how to make your own hanging rope shelves.
